Whether you're on a fitness journey or just trying to be healthier in general, cardio is probably important to you. But when we think of cardio we typically picture that one section at the gym full of different exercise machines; those work great for some, but if those machines are boring you should know that there are other options.

Going clubbing

Bet you never thought of this one! Every time I go out, I always exceed my step goal and get over an hour of exercise activity on my Fitbit; I could never have done that (unknowingly) at the gym and that's the beauty of it. While this is not a very sustainable lifestyle habit, it's a new perspective to consider when potentially feeling guilty about skipping the gym for the club.

Cleaning your room

Sure, this isn't the most exciting activity in the world but it feels great to get two things off your to-do list at once. You can also make the process more fun by blasting music and setting timers to push yourself to be more efficient. 


If you're not one to dance or play sports in real life, Just Dance, Wii Sports or any other game program like this is a great alternative. You can play alone or with friends and it's a great way to release your inner competitive side. 

Virtual Reality

Similarly to the Wii, if you really get competitive in a game, you won't even realize you've been moving around. You'll be doing your thing in your virtual reality while your body is getting a workout in real life. It's really the best of both worlds. 

HIIT Workouts

As someone who has recently gotten into HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training), I never considered most of the exercises that count for it to actually serve as cardio. Jumping jacks, skip rope, high knees and mountain climbers are all examples of something you can do for a HIIT workout and get some rather intense cardio in. The best part is that most of these exercises literally don't require anything but yourself (and maybe your phone for a HIIT timer).


Have a trampoline park nearby? Or do you own a trampoline? You're set. Not only is this super fun, but it also works your legs in case the cardio wasn't enough to convince you. You can also add leg resistance bands if it gets too easy. 

Hula hooping

What a great way to relive your childhood! Not only does hula hooping count as cardio, if you use a weighted hula hoop consistently you can really slim down your waist and tone your arms, obliques, back, etc (depending on where you twirl your hoop). There are tons of hoop exercise videos on YouTube if you need inspiration!

In the end, the best form of cardio is the one you enjoy and don't have to force yourself to do; that can be the elliptical at the gym or some alternate form of cardio mentioned above. It's with this chosen cardio that you'll be able to form a healthy habit and eventually transform it into a healthier lifestyle. You got this!
