Yes, you heard me! The new girl in town has been chosen for NBC's live production of Hairspray, and she's one of our very own!
Maddie Baillio from League City, Texas, is a sophomore at Marymount Manhattan College, and she will be playing the iconic role of Tracy Turnblad this December.
According to MMC's website, Maddie has been in many productions at the college, most recently, Once Upon a Mattress and Dracula. She was also chosen to be the Great American Songbook Youth Ambassador. She performed with the one and only Michael Feinstein at his famous establishment, Feinstein's/54 Below! There are so many more accomplishments that led up to Maddie's final moment of a Hairspray casting, and everyone at Marymount Manhattan can't help but show their love. All over social media you can find the MMC community and Hairspray lovers congratulating Maddie on her newfound role. She deserves every bit of happiness and praise!
Maddie's success is pure proof that if you work hard enough and believe in yourself, you can get very far. There were over 1,000 competitors at the open call in New York City this past April, and Maddie showed herself to be the best candidate for Tracy with her beautiful singing voice paired with her spunky attitude and theatre experience.
Along with Maddie, there will be other stars in the production including legendary actor and playwright Harvey Fierstein (reprising his role of Edna Turnblad), Martin Short (Wilbur Turnblad), Derek Hough (Corny Collins) and Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Hudson (Motormouth Maybelle). Alex Rudzinski (Grease Live!) and Kenny Leon (The Wiz Live!) will both be staging the broadcast with choreography by Jerry Mitchell (On Your Feet, Kinky Boots). The original music was written by both Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.
Catch Hairspray Live! this December, only on NBC! And to the Class of 2020, get ready for a road of opportunities when you come to MMC!
